Anti-Tourism NYC summary of Manhattan:
Manhattan can be considered the center of New York City. In fact, people consider Manhattan to be "the city" which even natives tend to call it. The fact is Manhattan is not just "the city"; the city is composed of 4 other boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island.)
Manhattan is the smallest of all the boroughs, and is in fact the smallest county in all of the United States of America, yet it still is the third most populated borough of the 5 boroughs.
Whatever the case is, Manhattan appears to be the spot for visitors and tourists to hit up. Even natives love to hang out at Manhattan, and there is a good reason for this. It's mostly due to Manhattan having a lot of tourist attractions, but it's also the appeal which Manhattan is given. It has it all, from the glitz & glamour which it's stereotyped to be, to also possessing a gritty & grimey essence which people tend not to talk about.
Don't let the stereotypes sway you; Manhattan is just as much of a "normal" borough as the rest of NYC. But it will always hold a certain prestiege in the eyes of outsiders because of tourism, which is where most of NYC's mainstream tourism is at. Granted, there is some mainstream tourism in other boroughs like Brooklyn, Manhattan seems to be the first spot tourists want to see. In reality, Manhattan seems to be the first place most visitors and tourists see anyway because if you're an immigrant new to the US, the first place you'll end up at is Liberty Island. If you're traveling through the MTA train system, you're bound to pass Manhattan. If you're looking to celebrate any major holiday, Manhattan seems to be the place where the holiday is celebrated (like New Years.) We suppose you just can't escape Manhattan, which is why people want to visit it the most out of all the other 4 boroughs. But don't mistake Manhattan as the only place to be when visiting NYC... the city spans beyond the boundaries of that island. |
